Amarilis de Rebua at Baylor UniversityDate: 04/30/2008 - 19:30 Location: USA: Waco TX Work Performed: Bachianas Brasileiras #5 Serestas Cancao do Poeta do Seculo XVIII Confidencia Amor y Peridia Melodia Sentimental Lundú da Marqueza de Santos GUEST ARTIST SINGS MUSIC OF BRAZIL Soprano Amarilis de Rebuá will present music of Heitor Villa-Lobos and other Brazilian composers in a guest recital on Wednesday, April 30, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Roxy Grove Hall. She will be joined on stage by a Baylor graduate student, pianist Guilherme de Almeida. The first half of the program will be devoted entirely to songs by Villa-Lobos, including "Canção do Poeta do Século XVIII," the four-piece set Serestas, "Lundú da Marquesa dos Santos," "Confidência, " "Amor y Perídia," "Melodia Sentimental," and this composer's most popular work, Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5. Following intermission, Ms. Rebuá and Mr. Almeida will perform "Modinha" by Jaime Ovalle, Alberto Nepomuceno's "Coração indeciso," Sérgio Bittencourt-Sampaio's "Meus oito anos" and "Valeiro," José Vieira Brandão's "Serei serás, Cláudio Santoro's "Acalando da Rosa," and Dorival Caymmi's "Acalanto." Closing the program will be Ary Barroso's "No Rancho fundo" and then two songs by Antônio Carlos Gomes: "Spirto Gentil" and "Ad ogni mover lontan di fronde." Amarilis de Rebuá won the São Paulo State Orchestra's Young Soloists Competition in 1983 and 1985, was a finalist in the Mozart Competition (Salzburg, Austria) and the Maria Callas Competition (Naples, Italy) in 1987, and performed on RAI-3 in 1988. She has recorded several Albums, including O Guarani by Carlos Gomes (complete opera), Saudades do Brasileiro, Árias de Ópera, and Canções de Carlos Gomes e Villa-Lobos. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano from Rio de Janeiro Federal University and the University of Brasília, where she studied with Arnaldo Estrella. She holds a Master of Music degree from Paraíba Federal University. This recital is free of charge and open to the public.
