Flute & Cello in Bungenore NSWDate: 07/16/2011 - 00:00 Location: Australia: Bungenore NSW Work Performed: Assobio a Jato Preludes for Guitar Classical tunes return to Bungendore “The cello sounds really good in the space and that interests me. This series is all about the venue and how to get the best out of the cello in that context.” The performance will build on the sell-out success of the first concert in the series, which featured Pereira and harpist Alice Giles at the gallery in March. Pereira said he enjoyed working with only one or two other performers to create a relaxed environment for his audience. “At some concerts you can feel a bit far away from the action,” he said. “But this series allows for a cosy and friendly sort of atmosphere with a bit of chatter. There's usually an opportunity for some conversation and more generous interactions with the performers.” He is also looking forward to performing with Walter, who is the current head of the Australian National University's (ANU) school of music. The duo will begin their performance with a collection of popular works known as the Suite Popular Española for Cello and Guitar, transcribed by Maréchal. “The guitar is quite a soft instrument when it's not amplified,” Pereira said. “We have gone for a Spanish feel because there is a lot of guitar music from that part of the world. “It was all about where we could find a nice repertoire and Spain is where you would expect to find the guitar.” Before the interval Pereira will also be joined on stage by Armstrong for Heitor Villa-Lobos' The Jet Whistle for Flute and Cello. After an interval Walter will return to the stage for Villa-Lobos' Five Preludes for Guitar and Sonatas from Radamés Gnattali. Pereira has more than 30 years' performance experience and currently teaches part time at the ANU. Living with his family in Murrumbateman, he also relishes the chance to take classical music to a broader audience outside. “While I like to think I have something great going in Canberra I find it just as much fun to get out to villages,” he said. “Especially as those audiences don't get as much of a chance to see this sort of thing.” Wood Works Gallery coordinator Stan d'Argeavel said the three-part concert series had proved extremely popular, with tickets already selling fast for the final concert later in the year. The final performance will feature Pereira with Geoffrey Lancaster on the fortepiano performing the Beethoven Cello Sonata Cycle. Pereira, Walter and Armstrong will take to the stage at the Bungendore Wood Works Gallery from 8pm on Saturday, July 16. For bookings or more information call the gallery on 6238 1682 Key 1
