Brazilian composer. Gomes was the first great home-grown composer of Brazil; he made a world-wide splash with his 1870 opera Il Guarany. At the end of Villa-Lobos' life he was honoured to receive the Carlos Gomes Medal (on July 13, 1959, a few months before his death.)
