Heitor Villa-Lobos described himself once as a resplendent rainforest bird from the Amazonas. With the vitality of Latin America he contributed undreamed of dynamic impulses to the European art music tradition. The opening concert of this year's Feldkirch Festival combines works of this godfather of Brazilian influenced classic with music of Marlos Nobre, often praised as his legitimate successor, and his mentor Mozart Camargo Guarnieri. All three have succeeded in transporting the wealth of folklore, ranging from tango to choros, to the concert hall, each in wonderfully individual ways and with undiminished vitality. A high carat cello ensemble from Bern and the Chamber Choir of Feldkirch together with the Brazilian world class musicians António Meneses with the cello, Cristina Ortiz at the piano and the soprano Marília Vargas fuse the sounds of a world near and far.
