The Portuguese Admiral Pedro Álvares Cabral's "Discovery of Brazil" on April 21, 1500, was followed on Easter Sunday, April 26, by the first Christian Mass on the American mainland. It's the subject of this 1861 painting by Victor Meirelles, which is now in the Museu Nacional de Belles Artes in Rio de Janeiro. And, of course, it's the subject of the final section of Villa-Lobos' Descobrimento do Brasil, music written for Humberto Mauro's classic 1937 film. The painting is in the Public Domain, and the above picture is from Wikimedia Commons. Happy Easter from The Villa-Lobos Website!
