Sand dunes near Fortaleza Picture: This spectacular view of sand dunes near Fortaleza is from the excellent website of Embratur, the official Brazilian tourist ministry.

During the period 1906 to 1910, Villa Lobos embarked upon a series of trips to Brazil's North-East and deep into the interior of the country. These trips took him to Bahia, Sergipe, Recife, Manaus, Belem, and to Fortaleza in the state of Ceará.

Fortaleza was the birthplace of Alberto Nepomuceno (1864-1920). Of the generation immediately before Villa Lobos, Nepomuceno (who studied in Europe before the turn of the century) played something of a mentor role for the younger composer. He was "um dos primeiros a reconhecer o gênio de Villa Lobos," in the words of this page, hommage to Nepomuceno. The page, part of the National Library's DIMAS site, has a couple of interesting MIDI files of Nepomuceno's work.
