#HeitorADay is the hashtag for a new Villa-Lobos Twitter project of mine, based in part on the notoriously large output of the great Brazilian composer, but mainly because (most of) the music is so great. I'll be listening to a different Villa-Lobos piece every day, and tweeting about it. I'll keep track of all the tweets here. We'll see how long it takes to use up my pretty extensive Villa-Lobos music collection.

The work as we know it was completed in 1912, but portions were written in the previous decade. This work is thus one of the earliest pieces by Villa-Lobos that's normally played today. The first movement is dedicated to Maria Tereza Teran.

The Guitar Preludes were written in 1940, and dedicated to Mindinha.

6 Preludes:

Lyric melody. Homage to the Brazilian sertanejo
Capadocia & capoeira melody. Homage to the carioca hustler
Homage to Bach
Homage to the Brazilian Indian
Homage to social life. To the young teenagers who frequent Rio's concerts and theatres
[the sixth prelude was lost, creating one of the great gaps in music history]

Takemitsu's riverrun draws its title from the opening word of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, and it explores a river's flow as a metaphor for how great musical innovations of one composer may influence others. Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos plunged into a dark, primitive world with Amazonas, based on the story of a beautiful girl who wantonly bathes in the Amazon only to be swallowed by a monster. Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, called the Pastoral for its depictions of countryside scenes including a rambling walk along a stream, completes the program.

Chamber Concert on February 12 at 4pm

Sage City's first winter concert features the Concerto for Bassoon and String Orchestra by H. Villa-Lobos, with soloist Jerry Lanoue, Beethoven's Symphony No 2 Opus 36 in D Major and a full performance of Opus 3 no. 2 Concerto Grosso by Handel. The concert is in Greenwall Auditorium in the VAPA building on the Bennington College campus. The venue is handicapped accessible and admission is free.

Heitor Villa-Lobos, a Brazilian composer who passed away in 1959, is commonly regarded as the most significant composer to emerge from Latin America.

Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 is perhaps his most poignant. It was composed when he was coming to terms with the likelihood that his hearing loss was incurable. Despite this dark shadow, the symphony includes great humor and brightness along with the strong emotion typical of Beethoven's works.

Handel's Concerto Grosso actually has a string quartet as its solo voice, with the principals of each of the string sections playing a solo and the remainder playing accompaniment.

I performed A Caixinha de Musica Quebrada on 7/9/09 at St John's Methodist Church in Albuquerque, NM. I don't see any mention on your website of that piece being performed publicly. Great piece. It was composed while he was on the Excursão Artistica in 1930-31, while riding on the train (according to Chechim filho, and Sousa Lima to whom it was dedicated).
