I performed A Caixinha de Musica Quebrada on 7/9/09 at St John's Methodist Church in Albuquerque, NM. I don't see any mention on your website of that piece being performed publicly. Great piece. It was composed while he was on the Excursão Artistica in 1930-31, while riding on the train (according to Chechim filho, and Sousa Lima to whom it was dedicated).

Written for orchestra in Rio in 1926, Choros #06 is dedicated to Arminda Neves d'Almeida.

Prof. Tarasti calls this work Villa-Lobos's Pastoral Symphony: "...it is by nature a lyrical work." He quotes Villa-Lobos:

"...the atmosphere of the work relects a sort of impression of the deserts of Northeastern Brazil: the climate, colors, temperature, light, birdsong, the fragrance of the capim grass blending with the capoeiras and all the elements of nature in a desert." Tarasti (1995), p. 109

The second song in the first album of Modinhas e cancoes, the Lundú da Marqueza de Santos is frequently performed as a stand-alone piece. It's been arranged in a variety of ways, including for harmonica and orchestra.

The Lundu is also the first piece in an orchestral suite (W395) written for the play Marquesa de Santos.

This is by far Villa's most popular work. The words to the second movement "Danca (Martelo)" are by Ruth Valadares Correa and Manuel Bandeira. Villa-Lobos dedicated the work to Mindinha, which you'll see in this picture of the original score of the version for voice and guitar. The date "Rio, 1938" refers to the original version of the first movement. The second movement was added in 1945.

Appleby gives the version for voice & guitar the number W391, and the version for voice and piano, W390.

There are two versions of this work, written in 1945: one for strings, and another for mixed chorus.

Duo Villa-Lobos (Lúcia de Vasconcellos e Luiz Néri Pfützenreuter) De passagem por Portugal, o pianista Luiz Néri Pfützenreuter e a soprano Lúcia de Vasconcellos estarão no Museu da Música para um recital de homenagem e divulgação da obra do maestro e compositor Heitor Villa-Lobos.

Heitor Villa-Lobos nasce a 5 de Março de 1887, no bairro de Laranjeiras, Rio de Janeiro. Desde cedo que toma contacto com a música, através das modas caipiras e dos tocadores de viola, parte integrante do folclore musical brasileiro e que, mais tarde, vem a universalizar-se nas suas obras. A partir dos seis anos de idade, aprende, com o pai, a tocar clarinete e violoncelo.

Mostra um interesse especial pela música praticada nas ruas e praças da cidade - o "choro", composto e executado pelos "chorões", músicos que se reúnem regularmente para tocar por prazer e em festas durante o Carnaval. No início dos anos 20 começa a compor um ciclo de catorze obras, para as mais diversas formações, intitulado "Choros"; dando origem a uma nova forma musical. Interessa-se particularmente pela obra de Johann Sebastian Bach, compositor que acaba por lhe servir como fonte de inspiração para a criação de um de seus mais importantes ciclos, o das nove "Bachianas Brasileiras". O ano de 1915 marca o início da apresentação oficial de Villa-Lobos como compositor, com uma série de concertos no Rio de Janeiro. Passa uma temporada em Paris onde ganha prestígio internacional, apresentando as suas composições em recitais e regendo orquestras nas principais capitais europeias.

Revelando uma grande preocupação pelo modo como a música é tratada nas escolas brasileiras apresenta um plano de Educação Musical à Secretaria de Educação do Estado de São Paulo. A sua aprovação faz com que seja convidado para organizar e dirigir a Superintendência de Educação Musical e Artística (SEMA), que introduz o ensino da música e do canto coral nas escolas. Músico consagrado internacionalmente, Heitor Villa-Lobos morre a 17 de Novembro de 1959, no Rio de Janeiro.

The benefit concert series If Music Be the Food . . . will continue its third season with a concert at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 25 Westminster Rd. (at East Avenue) in Rochester, on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m. Last year's concert series, which involved Eastman School of Music faculty and students, members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and international guest artists, yielded nearly $2,000 and 1,500 pounds of food for Rochester's Foodlink.

The second concert of Season 3 will open with Schumann's "Maerchenerzaehlungen" Trio for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano, performed by Eastman School Professors Jon Manasse, clarinet; Carol Rodland, viola; and Barry Snyder, piano. Eastman's Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Abra Bush, soprano, will be joined by eight Eastman cellists, including Professors Alan Harris and David Ying, in Hector Villa-Lobos' Bachianus Brasileiras #5. The concert will conclude with Dvorak's String Sextet, performed by Eastman professors Oleh Krysa, Rodland, and Ying, and their students Markiyan Melnychenko, Wendy Richman, and Jamie Clark.

Rather than pay an admission price, attendees are asked to bring canned goods and non-perishable food items to help stock the Foodlink shelves. Cash donations will also be accepted.

Works by Georges Enesco, Paul Hindemith, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Franz Liszt.

Sergey Rakitchenkov and Arkady Serper are both graduates of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory who began their distinguished careers in the major concert halls of Europe and Russia before immigrating to the United States. Rakitchenkov is a long-standing member of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, Serper a prominent pianist, composer, and faculty member at the Crowden School. Their performances are well known for a colorful, literate style, as well as an exacting technical precision. Featuring expressive collaboration between the musicians and compelling variations in instrument combinations, including several transcription premieres. The members of Melodiya also display an eclectic sensibility in their presentations, performing works from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, all with equal aplomb. For this program they present works by Enesco, Hindemith, Villa-Lobos, Schumann, Brahms, and Liszt.
