The first volume of Alma Petchersky's complete series for ASV includes my favourite piano music of Villa-Lobos. These are all singing works, with connections to various parts of Brazil, from the rainforest to the northeast plains to the urban slums. Petchersky brings out the saudade that's often present in VL's music, but perhaps misses a bit of the popular, swinging character of some of these pieces.
From the ASV website:
Villa-Lobos Piano Music on ASV: Vol. 1 (CD DCA 607): "The gifted pianist revels in the pianism of this feast . . . Her technique is consummate. A powerfully committed advocate" (Music & Musicians); "Her playing is marked not only by technical excellence but also a sense of discovery . . . Exciting pianism" (American Record Review); Penguin Guide ***
