- On Independence Day (September 7), Villa-Lobos conducts 30,000 school children singing patriotic and folk songs arranged by the composer.
- Premiere of the piano version of Bachianas Brasileiras #4, on 27 November, 1939, in Rio de Janeiro, with José Vieira Brandão. At the same concert, Brandão also played the premieres of other piano works including Valsa da dor and pieces from the Guia pratico.
