Distribuicao de flores in Upstate New YorkDate: 04/19/2009 - 15:00 Location: USA: Canandaigua NY Work Performed: Distribuicao de flores Series closes with South American, Celtic sounds By Staff reports Seeking to close this season's "Joyful Noise" concert series on a varied note, flutist Andrea Van Hof and guitarist Mark Arnold will present music from Brazil, Agentina, France, Ireland and Scotland for the final concert, set for 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at All Things Art. Van Hof, a music teacher at St. Mary's Church in Canandaigua, joins with Arnold - who has taught at Finger Lakes Community College, Hochstein at Canandaigua, Mobile Music and the Cobblestone Arts Center - to present music by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Jacques Ibert and Maximo Diego Pujol, as well as traditional Celtic dances. The season itself has been similarly varied, with the eclectic jazz of the Jen Sisbarro Trio, the handbells of Finger Lakes Bronze, the chamber music of the Hochstein String Quartet and the brass offerings of the Emerald Brass Quintet (which features Van Hof's husband, Chris, on trombone). "It has gone very well," Van Hof - a committee member for the series, said of this season of the concerts, designed to present light classical music in an informal setting. "We wish it could be attended more; it's provided by such a great grant." The concerts are made possible through the New York State Council on the Arts, Phelps Arts Center and Finger Lakes businesses. "Distribuicao de Flores" by Villa-Lobos, whose music is influenced by Brazilian folk music and by stylistic elements of the European classical tradition. According to Van Hof, this piece is a dance based on Greek motives, a "rhythmic piece that uses percussive elements from the guitar and ancient Greek scales played by the flute." "Entré Acte" by French composer Ibert is one of Van Hof's favorite pieces on the program, due to her love of French music. "I feel like it is so expressive and so relaxing to listen to as well as to play," Van Hof stated via e-mail. "Suite Buenos Aires" by Maximo Diego Pujol, an Argentine classical guitarist and composer. His compositions reflect the influence of Astor Piazzolla and similarly use the tango as a basic style. Each movement in this work depicts the city of Buenos Aires. "Celtic Collection," a collection of Irish and Scottish dances, arranged for flute and guitar by Boland and Dowdall.
