This installment of Maestro Cortese's annual musical travelogue series takes us on an exciting tour of Latin America. The concert opens with a selection from the Bachianas Brasilieras by Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos, probably the best known of all Latin American composers. In this piece, Villa-Lobos merges his love of Bach with his penchant for incorporating the sound of Brazilian national musical influences. The next work is a Symphony by Carlos Chavez, widely regarded as Mexico's foremost conductor and composer in the middle of the 20th century. Maestro Cortese next presents a world premiere of a new piece he composed specifically for this concert, Tango, inspired by the Argentinean dance craze of the early 20th century. The concert concludes with Variaciones Concertante, by Argentine composer, Alberto Ginastera. The fiery final movement of these orchestral variations is based on the high-voltage malambo, the competitive dance of Argentina's gauchos.
