Etudes for Guitar

Ben Bolt

When: July 29, 2011 | 7 p.m.
Where: Clayton Center for the Arts - Maryville, TN
Price: $10 | Ages: All ages

Classical guitarists occupy a special, but very lonely, corner of the musical world. They are truly solo performers for the most part, who rely only on the sensitivity of their internal musical voice and the subtle acoustic qualities of their instrument for their existence.
Guitarist Ben Bolt is one of those whose musical voice pulled him along a winding path. As a teenager in the 1970s, he journeyed to Spain to study with Andres Segovia, and later with Abel Carlevaro in Brazil and Guido Santorsola in Uruguay. Locally, Bolt served for many years as an adjunct professor of guitar at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City and has appeared as a stage guitarist for Knoxville Opera.
Bolt comes to Maryville this week as part of the Clayton Center for the Arts Friday Nights Live Music Series. As one might expect, his program will be drawn from the rich repertoire for the classical guitar, including some of Bolt's own compositions. Listeners may be familiar with Mason Williams' "Classical Gas" or be able to recognize a Villa Lobos étude. Also on his program will be works by Ponce, Granados, Malats, Lauro, and Tarrega.
