Each year the Berliner Philharmoniker ends its season with an open-air concert on the Waldbühne stage, a stadium in the capital's forests. The 2008 programme has a South American feel to it, with young Venezuelan Gustavo Dudamel at the helm.

The 2008 programme features Carlos Chávez's Symphony Nr 2 Sinfonía India, Manuel de Falla's Siete canciones populares españolas sung by soprano Ana Martína Martínez, Silvestre Revueltas's Sensemayá, Heitor Villa-Lobos's Bachianas brasileiras No 5 (with Martínez back to sing the vocalise line), Alberto Ginastera's ballet suite Estancia and Arturo Márquez's Danzón No 2.

Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most fêted of young conductors, rising out of Venezuela's el sistema, which has changed so many youngsters' lives by introducing them to classical music. Not only does he conduct the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, but he is currently music director of the Gothenburg Symphony and music director designate of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Mentored by both Claudio Abbado and Sir Simon Rattle, he is a natural choice to conduct the mighty Berliner Philharmoniker, especially in repertoire from his home continent.

The atmosphere is unique and unconventionally relaxed. People bring champagne, salmon and caviar, making the Waldbühne a giant picnic area. Candles are lit, transforming the area into an atmospheric venue for some of the most popular pieces of classical music. Musicians, soloists and conductors alike openly embrace the laid-back ambience, making the concert an unforgettable experience.

The last piece is traditionally the Berlin classic Berliner Luft, which is usually sung passionately by the audience - so passionately that the orchestra is barely audible! Romantic, different, and relaxed, this is a superb summer night in Berlin - not only for fans of classical music. A must-see.
