Journal Star PEORIA -

Dance takes center stage at St. Martin Chamber Players' next concert.

Titled "Invitation to the Dance," the free concert scheduled at 3 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Universalist Unitarian Church, 3000 W. Richwoods, features works based on dance music and dance forms from around the world. Pieces include as Villa-Lobos' "Valsa Choros for Guitar" and Sergei Prokofiev's "Overture on Hebrew Themes."

The afternoon concert also will feature dancers from the TazWood Dance Company, including Julia Burns, Meagan Davis, Laura Punke, Margaret Greenhalgh, Courtney Smith and Montana Parsons. (Burns, Davis, Punke and Greenhalgh are the choreographers.) They will dance an adagio and rondo by Mozart. The troupe also will perform "Mazel Tov," an Israeli folk dance, choreographed by Joan Halperin. Mary Dexter serves as the artistic director.

Providing narration will be Edith Barnard, a member of St. Martin and a performer who is best known for her one-woman show, "Harriet Beecher Stowe," sponsored by the Smithsonian.

"It will add a visual aspect," said Mark Filip, one of St. Martin's founders. "It will make the audience even more engaged on different levels, both aurally and visually."

Other members of St. Martin Chamber Players are Dawn Clark, principal horn for the Peoria Municipal Band and a longtime member of the Peoria Symphony; Denise Cooksey, a flutist with the Peoria Symphony; Grant Gillett, contrabassoonist for the Knox, Galesburg and Peoria symphonies; Nancy Gillett, a former professor of flute and oboe at Bradley University; Sherry Seckler, director of the music program at St. Mary's Cathedral; Wesley Sedrel, who plays guitar, mandolin and banjo; and David Stewart, principal clarinetist/assistant conductor for the Peoria Municipal Band.
