Classics 4: Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody and Pictures

Eckart Preu, conductor
Valentina Lisitsa, piano

Heitor Villa-Lobos /
Uirapuru (The Enchanted Bird)
Sergei Rachmaninoff /
Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Modest Mussorgsky /
Pictures at an Exhibition
(Orchestration by Maurice Ravel)

Rachmaninoff himself played the first performance of his Rhapsody in Philadelphia, under the direction of the legendary conductor Leopold Stokowski. In modern days, Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody was made popular in the 1980 movie Somewhere in Time, one of the most beloved love stories on the silver screen. You'll be dazzled by the composer's creativity as he bends and turns the theme around, producing variations of rare beauty. On the piano solo spotlight is rising star Valentina Lisitsa-a young pianist whom Chicago Classical calls "...a virtuoso of the first class."

Another brilliant Russian composer was Modest Mussorgsky, whose most famous piano composition-Pictures at an Exhibition-was orchestrated by the equally great French composer Maurice Ravel, in the 1920s. Each movement, inspired by drawings and watercolors by Viktor Hartmann, will awaken your imagination with visions of mythical creatures, a stroll in the breathtaking Tuileries Gardens, and finally, a magnificent musical depiction of the Great Gate of Kiev.
