I was really pleased to hear recently from Rio de Janeiro-born pianist Gilda Oswaldo Cruz. Besides being an excellent musician who specializes in the music of Claudio Santoro, Gilda is a radio producer for Antena 2, the Classical Music network of Portugal's public radio system. She's working on a major series of radio programs about Villa-Lobos, to be broadcast each Saturday in July, August, and September, 2008. The program is called CALEIDOSCÓPIO, and you can listen to it live (using the Windows Music Player) at 09:00 Portuguese time each Saturday (that's 08:00 UTC, 4 a.m. EDT, and 2:00 a.m. MDT here in Red Deer).
Luckily, these programs are are archived on the Antena 2 site. You can listen to these programs (in Windows Music Player wma format):
I'll update this list as each Saturday's program is archived on the Antena 2 site. Gilda has gathered some really interesting recordings of an excellent representation of the music of Villa-Lobos. I'm looking forward especially to her August 30th program, which will feature Gil Jardem's Nonetto with the choir and instrumentalists of the State of São Paulo University. Also, from the Sept. 6th program, the great unknown cantata Mandu-Çarará. And from the Sept. 20th show, the Quatuor Symbolique.
