New York Chamber Soloists in UtahDate: 01/21/2009 - 13:30 01/21/2009 - 19:00 Location: USA: Orem UT NYC soloists combine stories, music During story time at the Orem Public Library this week patrons will have the opportunity to experience storytelling through music as well as words. Members of the New York Chamber Soloists will be performing two free concerts in Orem on Jan. 21. The New York Chamber Soloists have been regarded as an outstanding ensemble of performers for nearly five decades. The group is a 12-member ensemble of exceptional strings, winds and keyboard. The soloists will talk about the relation between storytelling and music, a perfect combination for the Orem Public Library, known for its varied music collection. The first concert will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Storytelling Wing of the library where the ensemble will talk about each of their instruments as well as demonstrate the storytelling power of music through the piece "The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant." The piece, by Francis Poulenc, was inspired by the series of picture books written by French author Jean de Brunhoff. The second concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the Mountain View High School Auditorium. The evening performance will feature selections from Vivaldi, Villa-Lobos, Mozart and Beethoven in addition to the Poulenc piece. "This will be a wonderful opportunity to try out something new and do it in a classy way and free of charge," said Janet Low, manager of outreach services at the Orem Library. A $5 per person or $10 per family donation is suggested, although concerts will be offered free of charge thanks to grants from the Utah Arts Council, the Orem Arts council and the Western States Arts Federation. "[The Orem] audience will absolutely love this program; it's a great combination of accessible yet rarely heard pieces and it covers centuries of musical history," said Kate Barnes, programmer for the Chamber Soloists. The soloists are noted for their innovative performances of seldom heard works due to the unusual instrumental combinations for which they were written as well as more than 25 pieces written by notable composers for them. The six members of the group performing are: Jennifer Grim, flute; Melvin Kaplan, oboe; Curtis Macomber, violin; Ynez Lynch, viola; Adam Grabois, cello; and Elizabeth Metcalfe, piano/ harpsichord.
