Chateau guitar series continues with Latin rhythms

From our weekly issue dated September 02, 2009

For IVN

Beautiful acoustic guitar music again will resonate in the spacious lobby of the Oregon Caves Chateau on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11 and 12.

Portland resident Allen Matthews plans a lively after-dinner guitar program including South American-flavored music. Expect to be captivated by the exquisite, haunting classical music of Hector Villa-Lobos, and lively Brazilian rhythms.

"I always have a great time at the Chateau," said Matthews. "It has a wonderful atmosphere. Everyone should visit it for the history and the beauty of the place. I look forward to playing there again."
We want to hear from you

The concert is free to Chateau guests. The public is urged to reserve a room or dinner table early for this popular concert series. Phone 592-3400 or 592-4440 to make reservations or obtain further information.

Matthews adds spice to his performances with some Cuban music and his own compositions. Listeners may envision dancers swirling around the room as he blends irresistible Latin music with other engaging melodies.

Matthews is a classical guitarist, performer, teacher, percussionist, clinician and composer. His fascination with music and cultures of the world led him to live, absorb music, and perform in Indonesia, Central America, South America, Mexico and Canada. He also has performed extensively throughout the United States. Wherever he performs, he draws rave reviews for his lively and multicultural guitar music flavors.

He recently performed with a Brazilian musician and others at Mt. Hood Community College, where the blend of Latin-inspired music and classical was described as stellar by reviewers.

Matthews mastered numerous guitar techniques and styles, including classical, Baroque, Flamenco, and Brazilian. He holds a degree in guitar performance, and continues to attend master classes with many of the world's best guitarists. He is on the faculty at Lewis and Clark College and Oregon Episcopal School in Portland.

Concert-goers may look forward to an evening of rare musical pleasures during this fourth program in the Classics at the Chateau musical series, organized by Sue Williams, a board member for Illinois Valley Community Development Organization.

Williams commented, "Allen was here with the Scott Kritzer concert last October. His playing and rapport with the audience was an instant success. I'm very pleased the Chateau is hosting this marvelous artist."

Prom 76: Last Night of the Proms

* Date Saturday 12 September 2009
* Time 7.30pm - c22.30pm
* Venue Royal Albert Hall
* Tickets £25 - £82.50 price band F or Prom for £5
* Broadcast Live on BBC Two from 7.30pm, BBC One from 9.15pm and BBC Radio 3. Available on demand for the following week.

The Last Night brings Alison Balsom, a former Radio 3 New Generation Artist, in a concerto by one anniversary composer (Haydn) and Sarah Connolly in a famous lament by another (Purcell), while a third (Handel) provides the main orchestral fireworks.

Oliver Knussen's own Flourish (sparked by Stravinsky's Fireworks from the First Night) is complemented by new fanfares specially written by young Proms Inspire composers, which feature in our link-up with Last Night festivities around the country.

We mark 50 years since the deaths of Albert Ketèlbey and Gerard Hoffnung (the latter in Arnold's uproarious piece including parts for vacuum cleaners, floor polishers and rifles, written for the first Hoffnung Music Festival in 1956).

And the BBC SO's David Robertson presides for the first time over the massed forces on stage and in the audience.
