Bachianas Brasileiras #6

Boston Symphony Chamber Players

MARCH 14, 2010
Mozart's Quartet in F for oboe and strings opens this diverse concert, followed by Villa-Lobos' Bachianas brasileiras No. 6, for flute and bassoon, one of the great Brazilian composer's nine Bach-inspired suites for varied instrumentation. The Chamber Players also revisit Michael Gandolfi Plain Song, Fantastic Dances, for winds and strings, a work commissioned for them by the St. Botolph Club in honor of its 125th anniversary. Brahms' Quintet in B minor for clarinet and strings, Op. 115, a late piece considered by many to be the greatest of the composer's chamber music works, ends the program.

The talented young musicians who, in 1997, founded that rarity - a wind quintet - have emerged as one of America's most exciting and inspiring ensembles. Musical innovators as well as virtuoso performers, the Imani Winds have expanded the repertoire and audience for wind quintets with unique collaborations and new commissioned works. From the jazz and Latin idioms in performances with Wayne Shorter, Chris Brubeck and Paquito d'Rivera to the African and Middle Eastern influences in their own compositions and arrangements, they invigorate and enrich the classical tradition.

Their concert program links many worlds and eras with works by Maurice Ravel, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Sándor Veress, the young American jazz pianist Jason Moran, and Imani Winds' own Valerie Coleman.

Chad is a master of his instrument and routinely hailed for his infectious enthusiasm and exacting virtuosity. Equally at home with lesser-known gems, as well as the standard repertoire, his performances have brought him to cities across the United States, Canada, and Europe including Toronto, Washington DC, Columbus, Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, Toulouse and Montréal. His many recital appearances as a soloist and chamber musician have seen him in colleges and universities across the U.S., the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the La Gesse Festival in France. His recitals often feature commentary from the stage, something that his audiences have responded to very favorably.
