Jesús López-Cobos (Conductor), Neville Marriner (Conductor), Vladimir Ashkenazy (Conductor), Angel Romero (guitar), Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields (Orchestra), London Philharmonic Orchestra (Orchestra), New Philharmonia Orchestra (Orchestra), Cristina Ortiz (piano), John Harle (saxophone)
This is one of the best bargains in Villa-Lobos CDs. A-list orchestras and conductors perform some of Villa's best works, with top soloists. Angel Romero is a fine soloist in the Guitar Concerto, and John Harle is likewise stellar in the Fantasia for Soprano Saxophone and Orchestra. Cristina Ortiz also shines in Bachianas Brasileiras #3, perhaps Villa's greatest work for piano and orchestra. Ortiz fills out the set nicely with some solo piano pieces. It's also nice to hear the Momoprecoce, a fantasy for piano & orchestra based on the solo piano pieces Carnaval das crianças.
This disc is now (October 2011) available at The Naxos Music Library
